FAQs

Edwardian design, spanning the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, is characterised by lighter, more graceful aesthetics than heavy Victorian pieces, often drawing inspiration from 18th-century neoclassical motifs.

These trays were typically crafted from foundational woods like mahogany or satinwood, embellished with intricate marquetry and inlay using various dyed and natural veneers to create pictorial or geometric designs.

Authentication relies on examining the construction methods, such as dovetail joints where applicable, the natural oxidisation of the timber, hand-cut veneer edges, and the presence of period-appropriate brass handles secured with slotted screws.

An antique tray can be utilised functionally as a centrepiece on a coffee table or dining table to group smaller objects, or mounted on a wall as a decorative wooden panel to introduce texture and historical craftsmanship to a room.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent veneer cracking, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished timber surface.
