Truckle Cheese Stand

19th century
Description

Exceptionally well made truckle cheese stand in mahogany. Probably originally made to hold a truckle of West Country Cheddar cheese (as we know that for many years it resided in a Somerset dairy farmhouse).

If you do not have a butler to serve your cheese then it makes an ideal fruit basket or stand suitable for many uses.

Nice colour mahogany with great patina.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheese cradle, also known as a cheese coaster, is a curved wooden vessel designed to hold whole wheels or truckles of cheese on dining tables or sideboards. During 18th and 19th-century formal meals, these items allowed guests to slice cheese cleanly while protecting linens from oil and wax.

Traditional cheese coasters were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, walnut, or fruitwood. They often feature solid turned or slatted wooden bodies, occasionally fitted with castors or weighted plinth bases for mobility across formal dining surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural shrinkage along the wood grain, hand-cut joinery, and a rich surface patina developed from historic wax polishing. Original wear marks, small knife indentations from historic use, and old underside construction marks further distinguish original items from modern reproductions.

In modern settings, a cheese cradle functions well as a decorative tabletop vessel or dining room centerpiece. It can be placed on a kitchen island or sideboard to hold fruit, dried botanical arrangements, or simply displayed as a standalone piece of historic treen.

Clean the timber using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding immersion in water or the use of harsh chemical cleaners. Periodic application of a high-quality beeswax polish helps nourish the hardwood and preserve its natural patination.
