Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. It is characterised by a distinctive palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red and enamel decoration.

These items are crafted from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to create porcelain. The decoration combines cobalt blue painted under the glaze before the primary firing, followed by hand-applied enamels fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic pieces often display minor glaze imperfections, spur marks on the base, and evidence of hand-painted brushwork rather than transfer prints. Weight, foot rim wear, and the depth of the cobalt blue tone also assist in dating these ceramics.

Imari porcelain can be displayed on brass plate stands atop sideboards or arranged in symmetry as a wall gallery. The rich blue and red palette contrasts well against neutral wall finishes or dark wood furniture.
