Imari porcelain refers to Japanese porcelain made in the Arita region and exported from the port of Imari, historically recognised for its distinctive underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamel decoration.

Pieces were shaped from kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures with an underglaze cobalt blue pattern, and subsequently painted with overglaze iron-red enamels and gilded accents before a second low-temperature firing.
