With scalloped edge, blue central device and 4 panels decorated with bamboo

4cm H, 22cm Diameter.

Condition: lovely condition without any chips or nibbles to the edge, some light abrasion the to the inner surface glaze, hairline crack to the rim. The rim to the underside has two small chips.

Imari porcelain, originating from the Arita region of Japan, is recognised for its palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red and coloured enamels. During the 19th century, these wares were produced for domestic use and export, frequently featuring complex floral reserves and geometric border designs.

Imari wares are crafted from hard-paste kaolin porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The decoration requires an initial underglaze application of cobalt blue pigment, followed by a secondary lower-temperature firing to set overglaze iron-red enamel and gilded details.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit minor variations in hand-painted line weight, visible spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, and slight surface irregularities in the glaze. Overglaze enamels often display subtle surface wear, while the underglaze cobalt blue remains protected beneath the clear glaze layer.
