FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed during the Edo period, it is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron-red, orange, and gilded enamels featuring botanical or geometric motifs.

Pieces were crafted from kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures after the application of cobalt blue underglaze decoration. Following the primary firing, enamel colours such as iron-red and gold were applied over the glaze before undergoing a secondary firing in a lower-temperature enamel kiln.

Authentic 18th-century examples often display subtle hand-painted variations, spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, and slight surface irregularities in the glaze. The cobalt blue tone is typically soft or deep underglaze, and the foot rim usually shows unglazed kaolin clay.

Displaying Imari porcelain on a plate stand on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a glazed cabinet adds saturated colour and pattern. Mounting a selection of plates in a structured wall grouping creates a focal feature in dining rooms or foyers.

Wash by hand using warm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals that could wear down overglaze enamels. Ensure the piece is thoroughly dried before displaying, and store it away from direct heat or vibration sources.
