Japanese Imari Charger with Scalloped Rim, 19th Century / Meiji Period

Description

This is a super, large Imari charger, scalloped edged and decorated in the traditional palette of reds golds and blues.

Bands of patterns radiate from a central disc with a vase of flowers motif, the patterns a heady mix of birds, flowers and geometric designs - overall it makes for a truly vibrant and eye-catching centrepiece.

Painted on the underside are two symbols for the endless knot, and a pair of bats.

The charger is 31cm in diameter, and stands 5cm tall - when viewed from the side it undulates beautifully which really highlights its hand crafted artisanal origins.

The plate is in overall good condition with surface wear commensurate to its age. There are no cracks, but it does have a few nibbles and glaze grazes around the rim. Please see the photographs of these to see the extent and examine its full condition.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was named after the port of Imari, from where it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. Renowned for its distinctive palette of cobalt blue underglaze and iron-red overglaze with gilded accents, Imari ceramics became widely collected during the Edo and Meiji periods for both decorative display and functional export.

Authentic Imari pieces are crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay sourced from stone deposits near Arita. The production process involves a initial high-temperature firing for the body and blue underglaze decoration, followed by secondary lower-temperature enamelling fire cycles to apply the complex iron-red and gilded overglaze details.

Authentic nineteenth-century Meiji period Imari often features complex panelled patterns, floral asymmetry, chrysanthemums, and a deep underglaze cobalt blue paired with rich iron-red overglaze enamel. Inspecting the underside reveals distinctive foot rim construction, spur marks, or hand-applied painter marks consistent with historic Japanese ceramic production.

Decorative chargers function exceptionally well displayed on acrylic or wooden plate stands atop a console table, sideboard, or within a glass display cabinet. They can also be securely wall-mounted in vertical or symmetrical arrangements to serve as dynamic ceramic focal points in dining rooms and entryways.
