Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramic named after the port of Imari, where wares manufactured in the Arita region were shipped worldwide starting in the seventeenth century.

Imari porcelain is crafted from fine kaolin clay and decorated using an underglaze cobalt blue layer, fired at high temperatures, followed by overglaze enamel colours such as iron red, green, and gold accents fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit visible hand-painted variations, unglazed foot rims, minor glaze spur marks on the underside, and a characteristic colour palette combining underglaze blue with iron-red enamelling.

Display the plate upright on a brass or wooden plate stand on a console table, integrate it into a gallery wall plate display, or group it alongside neutral ceramic vessels to create visual contrast.
