This Georgian walnut drop-leaf sofa table originates from the late Georgian period around 1810. The piece displays a warm brown timber colour with a thick crossbanded top inlay, twin front-opening storage drawers fitted with circular brass ring handles, and twin lyre end supports joined by a turned stretcher. Splayed legs terminate in brass toes and castor feet. The surface shows rich grain patterns throughout the polished wooden construction. Practical dimensions measure 74 cm high, 155 cm wide, and 68.5 cm deep when fully open. Placed in a modern home, this table functions well behind the back of a sofa or against a wall in a living room, hallway, or study to provide surface space and discreet storage.

FAQs

Originating in the late 18th century, a sofa table is a long, narrow table designed to sit behind a sofa, featuring drop leaves at either end to extend the surface and shallow frieze drawers.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently decorated with crossbanded veneer borders, brass handles, and pine secondary timber for internal drawer construction.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints within internal drawers, natural wood shrinkage along the grain, period-accurate brass hardware, and original castors on the splayed feet.

Position the piece behind a freestanding sofa or along a hallway wall, styling the polished surface with modern ceramics, framed artwork, or table lamps to create textural contrast.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, apply high-quality beeswax once or twice annually along the timber grain, and protect the original finish from direct heat sources and sunlight.
