Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian style sofa table dates from 1910 and takes the form of a drop-leaf occasional piece constructed from solid walnut with rich warm brown burr walnut veneers. The rectangular top and pair of drawers feature crossbanding, complemented by cast brass batwing handles and double turned stretchers linking the supports above scrolling feet. Measuring 75 cm high, 82 cm wide when closed, and 56 cm deep, the table includes two drop leaves supported by pull-out loppers and is finished on the reverse side. Practical for everyday use in a modern interior, this freestanding table provides versatile placement options. It fits comfortably against a wall, in an entrance hall, or directly behind a sofa where the drop leaves extend the surface area when needed. The construction incorporates sturdy turned legs resting on scrolled feet, while the drawers offer convenient storage space for small household items.

FAQs

Introduced in the late eighteenth century, sofa tables were designed to sit behind or alongside a sofa, featuring drop-leaf ends and shallow drawers to accommodate light tasks such as reading, sewing, or writing.

They are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, frequently featuring figured veneers like burr walnut, dovetail-jointed drawers, and turned wooden stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic examples demonstrate period construction methods, including hand-cut drawer dovetails, natural wood shrinkage around joints, original cast brass hardware, and gentle oxidisation on unvarnished surfaces.

Position the piece behind a central sofa or along an entrance hall wall, styling the surface with table lamps, decorative ceramics, or modern art to balance the traditional woodwork.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or fading, and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish periodically using a soft cloth.
