Rare Pair of Carved Twin Tailed Mermaid Wall Brackets (Circa 1880)

19th century
Sold by Culvertons
Description

These rare and finely carved 19th Century twin tailed mermaids were left in a box by a customer, with a message that they belonged to her grandmother, and that they wished to sell them as they did not have the space to display them properly. Even though they have minor losses and a few old repairs, they still have a great deal of charm and appeal, more than enough to make the decision to purchase them, a simple one. Probably originating from the Black Forest region, Austria or Central Italy, all of which have historic associations with fine lime ( linden wood) carving, these robust and highly decorative wall mounted carved figures can still be used as originally intended - as you can see both mermaids support a small detachable table that can be used to display, for example, a candlestick or small potted plant. They are being sold as seen, however, we can undertake a certain amount of restoration if directed. Two wall fixings, constructed to snugly slot into the original on the reverse of the carving, accompany them.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
