Pair of Antique English Georgian Brass Chimney Horses / Door Porters

19th century
Description

This thoroughbred Pair of Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Brass Chimney Horses really are representative of the best of the breed, their gleaming coats and lifelike modelling capturing as it does the spirit of these fine animals. Standing upon moulded rectangular bases, these pieces are often mistaken for doorstops, for which purpose they today will of course typically be used, being ideal for that purpose. Their true original purpose was to stand, as decorative ornaments, on either hearth or mantelshelf, a tribute to those noble creatures which played such an important and prominent role in everyday life in days gone by.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically, brass chimney horses were designed as decorative hearth ornaments placed on either side of the fireplace, often serving double duty as heavy door porters or stops.

Most 18th and 19th-century brass door porters were cast in sand moulds using solid yellow brass, featuring hollow backs or weighted bases to provide stability.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-finishing, subtle surface irregularities from hand casting, original seam lines, and natural oxidisation in less exposed areas.

Position them on either side of a fireplace hearth, use them as functional bookends on a library shelf, or place them beside a grand entrance door.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and polish gently with specialised metal polish if a bright finish is preferred, or leave unpolished to preserve the natural patina.
