In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Edwardian brass doorstops dates from around 1920 and takes the form of equestrian figures mounted on inscribed plinths. The figures depict King George V and Queen Mary on horseback, set above rectangular stepped bases with wave-moulded decoration and bracket feet. Cast from solid brass with a bright golden metallic finish, the pieces show crisp relief detailing along the horses, royal clothing, facial features, and lettering. Each item measures 23 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Placed on the floor in a hallway, porch, or beside a heavy interior or front door, these functional items hold doors open while adding a classic English Country House decorative accent to a traditional interior space.

FAQs

Door porters are heavy cast metal ornaments designed to hold interior doors open, gaining widespread popularity in nineteenth and early twentieth-century British homes.

These items were predominantly cast using sand moulds, created either as solid forms or hollow-backed pieces with integrated weighted bases to withstand heavy doors.

Authentic pieces feature defined seam lines from sand casting, clear relief detailing, natural oxidisation within low-relief areas, and substantial physical weight.

They are commonly placed beside entryways, positioned flanking a fireplace hearth, or repurposed as heavy desk bookends on open shelving.

Regular dusting with a soft cloth is recommended; gentle metal polishes should be used sparingly to preserve the natural aged patina within carved details.
