Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Medici lions are classical sculptures depicting lions with one paw resting on a sphere, originally created in marble during antiquity and the sixteenth century to flank the entrance of the Villa Medici in Rome. During the nineteenth century, scale replicas were crafted in wood, stone, and bronze as mementos for travellers undertaking the European Grand Tour.

Nineteenth-century carved lion figures were sculpted from hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood using gouges and chisels. Artisans carved the anatomical details, mane, and spherical base from solid or joined blocks of timber before applying a stain and wax polish finish.

Authentic nineteenth-century wood carvings display subtle irregularities from hand-chiselling, natural timber shrinkage, and accumulated wax patina within recessed areas of the carving. Tool marks underneath the base or within deep folds of the mane reveal manual craftsmanship rather than modern machine production.

A pair of carved lions functions effectively placed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or structured within a bookshelf arrangement. They provide balance and classical architectural structure when displayed alongside leather-bound volumes or framed prints.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to reach recessed areas. Apply a light coat of clear beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and retain the finish, ensuring the object remains away from radiators and direct heat sources to prevent splitting.
