This French Provincial religious sculpture originates from the nineteenth century. The piece comprises a dark brown stained timber cross with a stepped plinth base, supporting a hand-carved fruitwood corpus of Christ with a sculpted drape detail and visible losses. The wooden structure has a dark ebonised finish on the cross and base, contrasting with the warmer brown tones of the carved corpus. Visible details include carved facial features, an expressive posture with outstretched arms, and layered square timber blocks forming the stepped base. Measuring 59 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep, this sculpture fits appropriately on a mantelpiece in a traditional interior setting.

Standing crucifixes were historically crafted for private devotion in domestic altars, chapels, and convents throughout France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These devotional items were typically hand-carved from native timber such as walnut, oak, or fruitwood, often mounted onto stained or ebonised wooden crosses with plinth bases.

Authentic period pieces display hand-tool marks, natural timber shrinkage around joint points, surface patination, and distinct hand-carved details in the figures drapery and anatomy.

A carved wooden crucifix can be displayed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table alongside natural stone and ceramic objects to create a curated decorative vignette.

Keep the timber sculpture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting gently with a soft dry brush and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly.
