This nineteenth century Regency cellarette takes a sarcophagus form in a warm brown light coloured mahogany with well figured grain and a polished finish. The stepped hinged lid lifts to an uninterrupted interior, while the exterior shows a Brahma style key escutcheon at the front and cast brass lion mask handles with ring pull mouths on the sides. A carved gadrooned moulding runs around the entire base above an enclosed plinth with original cast brass castors. Measuring 47 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this practical wine cooler offers compact proportions for display. Position this piece in an empty corner of a dining room or living space to serve as a distinctive accent table or storage container for bottles and glassware. The classical proportions and warm timber tones complement traditional and eclectic interiors alike, providing a surface for decorative objects while housing items out of sight. The solid construction and historical hardware add architectural presence to contemporary rooms without overwhelming the existing layout.

A Regency sarcophagus cellarette is a specialised wooden container designed during the early nineteenth century to hold wine bottles, characterised by tapered sides inspired by classical ancient sarcophagi.

These pieces were primarily crafted from high-grade mahogany or rosewood, lined with lead or zinc to hold ice and prevent water leakage, and fitted with brass handles.

Authentic examples feature neoclassical design elements such as lion mask drop handles, gadrooned mouldings, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and evidence of historic lead or zinc interior linings.

A cellarette can serve as a sophisticated accent piece in a formal dining room, placed alongside a sideboard, or utilised in a living area as occasional storage.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, while keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking.
