Regency Mahogany Box Cellarette

19th century
Description

A Very Fine Quality Regency Period, Georgian, Mahogany Box Cellarette, The Well Figured Lift Up Lid Enclosing Recently Fabric Lined Interior Storage Cavity, Having Moulded Panel Front And Sides Retaining Original Brass Handles, Raised On Extremely Elegant Tall, Turned, Tapering Legs.

This fabulous quality little Regency piece of furniture would have started its life as a box cellarette for the storage of wine. Based on the design, quality and timber used it is almost certainly from the workshops of Gillows and is really quite a lovely piece of furniture.

It could now of course serve great purpose as a little occasional lamp table, coffee table, or even a little bedside table. There is also of course the added bonus of being able to utilise the interior storage space which has been recently relined and therefore could accomodate anything one wishes.

Overall the condition is excellent with very little historical damage of any kid and just a few old scuffs and scrapes which have now blended in with the surface and patina. It retains its original brass handles to the side and a working lock and key. The legs are incrediblty elegant and really give the item class and sophistication.

As with all items which we offer for sale it has been inspected in our workshops and attended to by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers, receiving a natural wax polish before being placed on sale to ensure it is in its best possible condition and ready for immediate placement following purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cellarette is a timber cabinet or chest produced during the 18th and 19th centuries specifically to store and conceal wine and spirit bottles within the dining room.

Regency cellarettes were traditionally crafted from mahogany timber, frequently featuring zinc or lead internal linings for ice, along with cast brass side handles and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature early 19th-century construction details including turned or tapered legs, flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron hinges, and side brass carrying handles.

An antique cellarette functions as an occasional side table, lamp stand, or standalone bar cabinet in formal dining areas, living rooms, or entryways.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to maintain the timber finish.
