This Regency mahogany sarcophagus cellarette, in the manner of Thomas Hope, dates from around 1830 and follows a classic sarcophagus form with warm brown timber tones. The piece stands on turned gadrooned feet and features a brass keyhole escutcheon on the front, along with a hinged lid and ebony inset stringing to the top. Inside, the cellarette retains its original lead interior liner and operates on its original hinge with the original lock. Structurally and cosmetically sound following workshop conservation, the timber carries an even wax polish across its heavy, well-constructed surfaces. Practical dimensions measure 51 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. In a modern interior, this wine cooler serves as a striking focal point in a fireplace alcove or living space, doubling as a decorative storage chest. The traditional design and rich mahogany grain complement period properties as well as contemporary settings seeking a formal Regency accent. Placing the cellarette beside a seating area provides a surface for display while keeping the storage compartment accessible for bottles and accessories.

A sarcophagus cellarette is a freestanding wooden container designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold and cool wine bottles, characterised by a tapered rectangular shape inspired by ancient Roman and Egyptian sarcophagi.

Regency cellarettes were predominantly constructed from dense flame mahogany, featuring zinc or lead sheet linings designed to retain ice and prevent water leakage from damaging the timber structure.

Authentic 19th-century cellarettes typically display hand-dovetailed corner joints, original internal metal lining, period brass hardware, and characteristic wear or oxidisation around the feet and base.

An antique cellarette functions well placed within a dining room alcove, beside a sideboard, or as a low-profile architectural storage container in a study or hallway.

Maintain mahogany cellarettes by dusting with a soft lint-free cloth, applying high-grade beeswax twice yearly along the grain, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
