A good C19th pair of lacquered papier mache vases by Jennens & Bettridge (stamped) of baluster form with chinoiserie scenes; the flared rims with a gilt edge above a slim neck and baluster bodies finely decorated with gilt pavilions, buildings, bridges with Chinese figures and trees with colourful flowers all on a dark burgundy background. The makers stamp to the underside of Jennens & Bettridges under a crown.

During the 19th century, British makers refined the technique of pasting and pressing paper sheets into moulds to create dense, durable decorative objects. Companies such as Jennens & Bettridge patented techniques for inlaying shell and decorating pieces with elaborate lacquer, gilding, and Chinoiserie landscapes.

Layers of paper glued over shaped core moulds were subjected to heat and oil treatments to achieve structural density. Multiple coats of asphaltum or spirit varnish were applied, baked, polished smooth, and then hand-decorated with gold leaf, bronze powder, or hand-painted details.

Authentic items frequently feature an impressed makers mark or crown stamp on the base or underside. Authentic period pieces also display natural fine crazing within the lacquer varnish, heavy hand-painted gilding with subtle wear, and precise moulding without modern synthetic resin seams.
