This Georgian dining table is a George III mahogany oval tilt-top breakfast table dating from around 1800. The piece is constructed from mahogany with flame mahogany veneer and a contrasting crossbanded border around the edge of the large oval top. The wood displays a warm brown colour with natural figuring throughout the timber. The top tilts vertically on a mechanism supported by a central turned column and elegant splayed legs terminating in brass caps and castors. Additional visible details include the polished finish, brass hardware on the feet, and the grain patterns radiating across the surface. The table measures 71 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 117 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table functions as a dining table or multi-purpose surface in a dining room, kitchen, or living space, offering the flexibility to store the top vertically against a wall when floor space is needed.

A George III breakfast table typically features an oval or rectangular mahogany top attached to a central pedestal column with a catch mechanism. Designed in late 18th-century Britain, these tables allowed the top to tilt vertically, permitting convenient storage against a wall when not in use.

Primary construction utilised solid wood and veneers of West Indian or Cuban mahogany, celebrated for density and rich grain patterns. Decorative borders often incorporated crossbanding in satinwood or rosewood, while brass was used for the tilt catch, caps, and castors.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, original brass release catches underneath the top, and age-consistent wear to the timber finish and castors. The underside of the top often reveals hand-sawn timber marks and secondary woods like pine or oak used for the block support.

When not in use for dining, the table top can be tilted vertically to act as a decorative backdrop in an entryway or living space, displaying the natural timber figure. When lowered, it serves as a functional four-to-six-person dining table that pairs easily with modern or classic seating.

Maintain the finish by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently with a soft microfibre cloth. Position the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent uneven fading or timber shrinkage.
