This nineteenth-century Regency occasional table or wine table is constructed from yew wood in a warm brown colour with visible burr figuring across the surfaces. The piece comprises a square top with rounded corners above a shallow frieze, supported by a turned vase-tapering central stem and a shapely triform base with carved turned feet. The wood has a polished finish displaying good patination and natural grain variation. The table stands 70 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this compact table serves as an occasional piece or wine table placed near the end of a sofa or beside a seating area. The diminutive proportions allow for versatile placement in compact spaces such as a corner, hallway, or reading nook for holding small items or a drink.

FAQs

Originating in early 19th-century Britain, these portable tables were designed to hold drinks, candles, or small personal items in drawing rooms and parlours.

They are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or figure-rich yew wood, supported by turned central columns and solid bases.

Authentic pieces feature period construction methods, including hand-cut joinery, original turned timber spindles, and age-appropriate wear on the base undersides.

This table functions as a side table placed beside a sofa or armchair to hold lighting, drinks, or books.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting with a dry cloth and applying beeswax along the grain while avoiding direct heat and moisture.
