Regency Mahogany Rectangular Wine Table

19th century
Description

A Good Quality Regency Period, Early 19th Century, Mahogany Occasional Wine Table, Having Superbly Figured Rectangular Top And Frieze, Over Reverse Tapering Turned Column And Three Elegant Scrolling Tripod Legs With Original Turned Feet.

Dating from the early part of the 19th century, this extremely attractive little table is a good example of the elegant occasional furniture produced during the Regency period, combining useful proportions with a simple, but refined design.

Constructed from good quality mahogany throughout, the rectangular top retains particularly attractive figuring, as does the frieze below, whilst the rich colour and surface which has developed over the last 200 years or so adds considerably to its appeal.

The reverse tapering central column is an unusual and elegant feature, with various turned mouldings providing additional interest, before terminating in three well shaped scrolling tripod legs and original turned feet.

Tables of this size are incredibly useful around the home and this example could serve equally well as a wine or lamp table alongside an armchair or settee, or simply as an attractive occasional table wherever a small surface is required.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.

This 19th-century Regency period occasional wine table is constructed from warm brown mahogany with a smooth surface finish. The piece comprises a rectangular top with figured grain, a reverse tapering turned central pedestal column with decorative mouldings, and three scrolling tripod legs terminating in small turned ball feet. The piece stands 72.5 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. In a modern interior, this compact table functions well as a practical surface placed at the end of a sofa, next to an armchair, or in any corner requiring a small stand for a lamp or drinks. The clean lines and traditional timber construction allow it to blend easily with both period and contemporary room settings.

Originating in early nineteenth-century Britain during the Regency period, wine tables were compact occasional tables designed to support glasses or decanters alongside armchairs and sofas.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, featuring hand-turned central baluster columns, hand-cut joinery, and veneered rectangular or circular tops.

Authentic Regency examples exhibit evidence of hand-planed timber, hand-cut dovetails or block joints, age-appropriate wear to the base legs, and original central column shrinkage.

A wine table functions effectively positioned beside a sofa or armchair, providing a surface for lighting or drinks while adding historic timber tones to modern room schemes.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish twice yearly, ensuring the timber remains away from direct radiator heat sources.
