Georgian occasional table dating from around 1800, executed in mahogany with a warm brown finish and boxwood stringing to the top. The top is square with gently rounded corners, resting upon a slender, spiral-turned central column. Below the turning, three splayed legs sweep outwards to rest on dark, rounded feet. The timber exhibits a pronounced grain pattern across the square surface, while the turned stem displays detailed twisting along its vertical shaft. Measuring 76 cm high, 38.5 cm wide and 38.5 cm deep, this piece serves well as a compact accent surface in a traditional living space. Placed beside the end of a sofa or in a quiet corner of a room, it provides a stable platform for a reading lamp, a small stack of books or a decorative cup and saucer.

Originating in eighteenth-century Britain, Georgian tripod tables typically feature three cabriole or splayed legs attached to a central turned column supporting a small round or square top. These versatile tables were constructed to be easily moved around reception rooms for tea serving, reading, or holding candles.

Dense West Indian and Cuban mahogany were the primary choice for high-quality Georgian furniture due to their durability, close grain, and deep reddish-brown tone. Oak and pine were occasionally used for internal structural blocks or under-framing.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-sawing and hand-planing on the underside, hand-cut dovetail joints securing the legs to the central bearer block, and uneven natural shrinkage across the timber top over time.

A tripod occasional table functions effectively as a side table beside a armchair or sofa, providing a compact surface for a table lamp, books, or drinks. Its slender silhouette also suits narrow alcoves, entryways, or window bays.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme changes in humidity to prevent timber movement or fading.
