This late nineteenth-century Qing Dynasty Chinese scholar low table or stand is made from dark brown hongmu hardwood with a cleaned and waxed finish. The rectangular piece has a floating panel top and inset panelled ends, elevated on straight square legs with shaped feet. The open-work frieze displays ruyi cloud motif carvings and endless knot style fretwork spandrels at the corners. The table measures 18 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. It functions effectively today as a distinctive coffee table or a low display stand in a living room or study to hold decorative items such as books, ceramics, or small sculptures.

A scholars table, or kang table, is a low timber surface traditionally utilised in Chinese interiors for calligraphy, reading, or displaying prized art objects while seated on a raised platform.

Qing dynasty furniture was predominantly crafted using dense tropical hardwoods such as hongmu, zitan, and huanghuali, constructed with complex mortise-and-tenon joinery without the use of nails or glue.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved decorative motifs, precise floating panel construction to accommodate timber movement, and natural surface patination rather than uniform modern synthetic finishes.

A low Chinese table functions as a refined coffee table or a low display platform for books, ceramics, and botanical arrangements within contemporary living spaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly to preserve the woods lustre while avoiding exposure to direct sunlight and moisture.
