Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A jardiniere is a decorative container or stand designed to hold indoor plants and floral displays. Emerging in prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries across France and Britain, these pieces allowed homeowners to display cultivated botanicals inside reception rooms while protecting floor surfaces.

High-end planters from this era were constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often finished with flame veneers. The interior usually contained a fitted zinc, lead, or tin tray to retain water, while the exterior was frequently accented with gilt-bronze or brass mounts.

Authentic pieces feature construction details such as hand-cut joinery, turned or hand-fluted legs, and natural oxidisation on the underside of the timber. Original metal liners often display subtle patination, and gilt metal ornamentation is typically secured with period-appropriate threaded pins or screws.

A mahogany jardiniere can be positioned in a bay window, entrance hall, or beside a hearth to house potted greenery such as ferns or orchids. Alternatively, with its fitted liner, the piece can serve as a decorative log holder or an ice bucket for bottled beverages during formal events.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the French polish. Remove the metal liner before adding water or plants to prevent moisture from contacting the mahogany, and clean gilt metal components using a dry, soft-bristled brush.
