Description

Late C19th Chinese carved hardwood tripod table of rare form . Heavily-carved rectangular top tripod base occasional table of Anglo-influenced form . Inset burr thuya-wood or root-wood panel top ,with well-carved edge and pierced frieze. Supported on three 'umbrella' style brackets onto a carved columnar shaft with lobed bulbous section, terminating in three swept legs with carved and incised decoration onto stylised carved claw feet. Heavy quality 'hongmu' timber of rich dark colour and intensity . A scarce table design for Chinese furniture , of a form not seen before by us .Cleaned and waxed.

This late nineteenth-century Chinese occasional side table belongs to the Qing Dynasty period, manufactured in China around 1880. Made from heavy quality hongmu rosewood timber with a rich dark brown colour and waxed finish, the piece features an inset burr thuya-wood or root-wood panel top bordered by a well-carved edge and a pierced relief-carved apron. Three reticulated spandrel brackets support the rectangular top above a turned pedestal column with lobed bulbous sections. The structure terminates in three swept legs decorated with carving and incised details that rest upon stylised carved claw feet.
