Antique Folding Games Board

1920 - 1940
Description

A good example of a folding games board dating from the early 20th century. It has a pine frame with an inlaid chess board on the outside, opening to storage on the inside. It comes with a set of turned wooden chequers and a good quality set of turned wooden chess pieces in a box. The chess pieces are Staunton type turned from ebony and boxwood with weighted bases and green felt bottoms.

The whole set is good quality and in good condition for its age. There are signs of age and use, some light surface marks and knocks on the board but no major damages. There has been a small repair to one rook chess piece but overall it is certainly a very usable set.

Approximate Dimensions :

Board (open) : 13 1/2” (34cm) square

Height of King : 2 3/4” (7cm)

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Folding games boards gained popularity in nineteenth-century Britain as compact, portable entertainment for domestic parlours and travel. Often crafted from hardwood with dual-purpose interiors for chess, draughts, or backgammon, these boards reflected the Victorian emphasis on parlour games and fine woodworking craft.

Traditional construction typically employed solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, walnut, or pine, frequently decorated with inlaid bone, mother-of-pearl, or contrasting timber veneers. Fastenings were generally fashioned from brass hooks or hinges, while playing counters were turned from wood or carved bone.

Authentic period boards display signs of manual construction, such as slight irregularities in the inlay, hand-cut dovetail joints, or cast brass hardware with natural oxidisation. Surface patina, gentle edge wear, and historical shrinkage in the timber also indicate original age rather than modern reproduction.

An antique games board serves as a tactile focal point when styled open on a coffee table, low sideboard, or library desk. Setting out select chessmen or draughts counters introduces texture, warmth, and historic interest to modern living spaces.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent warping or cracking of the timber. Clean gently with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the patinated surface.
