Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century folk art figural screw-type nutcracker is fashioned from dark brown hardwood with a polished finish. The upper section comprises a hand-carved male bust depicting a gentleman wearing a cap and jacket with defined lapels and button detailing, while the lower portion consists of a slender turned wooden handle with multiple decorative rings and a flared base. Visible signs of age include natural timber grain variations and minor surface abrasion along the edges of the carving. Measuring 12 cm in length by 5 cm in width, this compact treen piece is well suited for display on a bookshelf, desk or mantlepiece within a gentleman's library or study interior. It functions as a decorative decorative accessory for collectors of antique wooden utensils and vernacular domestic objects.

FAQs

Treen literally means of a tree and refers to small, functional domestic objects made entirely from wood. Prior to the widespread availability of cheap metal and plastics, everyday items such as nutcrackers, bowls, and snuffs were hand-carved or lathe-turned by craftspeople.

Traditional treen nutcrackers were typically crafted from dense, fine-grained hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, or walnut to withstand mechanical pressure. Mechanics were either lever-based or featured internal hand-cut wooden screw threads to crack shell husks.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural surface wear, smooth patination from historic hand contact, and irregularities consistent with hand carving tools. The internal screw threads or pivot points usually display age-appropriate wear and slight shrinkage of the timber over time.

Small treen items serve as tactile accent pieces when arranged on bookshelves, mantels, or curio trays alongside books and pottery. Grouping multiple treen objects together creates a layered, collected display within traditional or contemporary spaces.

Keep wooden treen away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Clean gently with a soft cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax paste periodically to protect the timber patination.
