Kendall House Antiques Ltd. has dated this Victorian Bird Taxidermy Dome to the 1870s.
In Victorian times Budgerigar where more than common pets, and would have been highly valued and even quite exotic birds, this is probably the reason it was entrusted to the already highly regarded taxidermist ‘Peter Spicer’’ this was always going to be a quality item and would have been an expensive commission in its day.

Peter Spicers large, early, and desirable trade label can be found pasted to the backboard, which dates this particular case to the early 1870’s. This remarkable example of Victorian taxidermy is by the master himself ‘Peter Spicer’ who had just recently moved to 10 Victoria Terrace, and is well before 1904 when his business was restructured and re named Peter Spicer & Sons. This is also the address that became famous for producing the most remarkable taxidermy for over 75 years! that in my opinion was never bettered.

Notes: This particular label can be dated quite accurately, and covers the years 1871 – 1876. For more information on this great Victorian taxidermy see ‘A Record of Spicer’s’ published by myself ‘The Victorian Taxidermy Co Ltd’ back in 2001.
