Victorian Taxidermy- Pair Of Snow Buntings In Flat Sided Dome. Circa 1875
£1,500 $2,014 €1,730
The birds modelled amongst snow covered ground work, look closely and you will see a small crevice or scrape with three hanging (glass) icicles to the left-hand side, plus a small drainage pipe is poking out of the ground work to the right-hand side, with a realistic (glass) frozen trickle of water hanging from it. One bird is perched the other suspended in flight. In all a magical case, complete with its original four-sided glass dome. The square format dome or shade as they were often referred to, being a more expensive option, opposed to the arched dome which was more commonly used amongst Victorian taxidermist. The ebonised base complete with four small bun feet. Unlabelled, but very much in the style of Cole of Norwich (1838 -1906) one of the three main Norfolk taxidermists of the period.
Provenance: Purchased directly by ourselves from a deceased estate in Norfolk where it has stood shielded from the light for the past fifty or so years at least.
Height 57cm, Width 30cm, De...pth 24cm
The snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) breeds further north than any other small bird in the world. It is an Arctic specialist, with a circumpolar Arctic breeding range throughout the northern hemisphere. Predominantly a winter visitor to Britain & Ireland although a tiny breeding population remains amongst snow fields on the highest Scottish mountains.
Thank you.
