A Fine 18th Century Aubusson Tapestry

For Sale by Textile Antiques
Description

‘La Grosse Tour’

Circa 1751-1765

From a series of seven tapestries known as ‘La Tenture des Petites Figures’, the cartoons for which were designed by Jean-Joseph Dumons (1687-1779) in 1751, with retouchings by François Boucher (1703-1770).

Woven in silk and wool with a young woman reclining beneath a lofty thatched shelter amid tall sinuous trees, her head gently cradled by her shepherd companion who holds his houlette and points towards his sheep cooling themselves beside some swans in a calmly flowing river, over which a cowherd crosses a wooden bridge beneath the large round tower from which the tapestry takes its name.

The two painters had previously collaborated at the Beauvais tapestry workshops, and here Dumons adapted an existing Boucher painting, ‘The Washerwoman’ - now in the collection of the Museum Kunstpalast, Dusseldorf (inv. no. M 245) - replacing the figure of the laundress with that of a crouching dog, itself abstracted from Boucher’s ‘Paysage près de Beauvais’ (Hermitage, museum number: HE-5734).

The exceptionally fine weave of the tapestry echoes that of an example in the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, Lisbon (inv. no. 2132), while another more coarsely woven version may be found in the collection of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (acc. no. 1964.74).

Vide: ‘Aubusson - Tapisseries des Lumières’, Pascal-François Bertrand, publ. Snoeck 2013, pp. 149-156, for a comprehensive discussion of this tapestry.

This eighteenth-century Aubusson wall tapestry is an authentic French Rococo textile piece, woven from wool and silk with a muted palette of blue, green, and beige. Designed by Jean-Joseph Dumons with retouchings by François Boucher, the composition depicts a pastoral landscape with a classical stone tower, a thatched structure, a river scene, and figures amidst tall sinuous trees. The fine hand-woven textile features a dark blue woven border and shows visible tonal gradients across the water, foliage, and architectural elements. The tapestry measures 237 cm high and 346 cm wide. It suits placement in a grand reception room or above a sideboard in a traditionally styled home interior.

Originating from the town of Aubusson in central France, these tapestries are hand-woven flat-weave textiles depicting pastoral landscapes, classical motifs, and architectural scenes, particularly prominent during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Aubusson tapestries were traditionally hand-woven on low-warp looms using natural fibres such as wool for structural weight and texture, complemented by silk threads for fine highlights and detailed figures.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples feature hand-spun wool and silk yarns, flat-weave construction, subtle natural dye fading (verdure tones softening to blue-greens), and original backing cloth or hand-stitched hanging bands.

Large historic textiles function as primary wall focal points above sideboards or in entrance foyers, adding textile warmth, acoustical dampening, and historical contrast against contemporary walls.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and damp conditions, support the weight evenly using broad Velcro hanging strips or conservation rods, and gently clean using a low-suction vacuum with a mesh screen.
