George III Brass-bound Mahogany Wine Cooler Jardinière on Stand Attributed to Gillows

18th century
Description

George III Brass-Bound Mahogany Wine Cooler Jardinière On Stand attributed to Gillows

Circa 1770

George III period mahogany and brass bound wine cooler. The oval cooler is composed of mahogany staves, joined with brass banding and with brass handles either end with a lion mask motif with original zinc liner. The stand with four turned out-swept legs terminating in brass wheel casters. The lion’s head handle relates directly to a wine cooler commissioned by Gillows in 1774. A distinctive hardware motif matching original Gillow commissions from the 1770s.

These iconic cast brass or ormolu lion masks are most frequently found adorning late 18th-century George III period brass-bound wine coolers and cellarets / cellarets. Gillows of Lancaster famously employed these fierce, classical features, with the handles often cast to resemble a traditional heraldic lion's head holding a heavy brass drop ring in its jaws.

Because of the meticulously detailed nature of the Gillow archives pieces bearing this specific lion's head handle relate directly to recorded commissions made by the firm in the mid-1770s.

Literature: Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster, 2008, v 1, p 307, pl 338

This George III period wine cooler jardinière on stand dates from the 18th century in the English Country House style. Constructed from dark brown mahogany staves with a zinc liner, the oval vessel incorporates twin brass bands and cast brass lion mask ring handles at either end. The base comprises four turned, out-swept legs terminating in brass wheel castors. Measuring 50 cm high, 70 cm wide and 45 cm deep, the piece sits upon a low stand beneath the main body. Suitable for interior placement in an empty corner, the jardinière holds potted plants or stems of allium flowers indoors. The combination of warm timber tones, gleaming polished metal bands and classic hardware suits traditional hallway displays or living room arrangements.

Popularised during the 18th century, wine coolers or cellarettes were designed to hold ice and keep wine or champagne bottles chilled during formal dining events before being repurposed as decorative indoor planters.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid mahogany, reinforced with heavy brass bands, and fitted with lead or zinc liners to protect the timber interior from moisture.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass castors, period lion mask or drop handles, and evidence of historic wear or patination on the metal straps.

An antique wine cooler serves well as a botanical vessel for fresh flowers or indoor foliage in a hallway corner, dining room alcove, or beside a bay window.

Dust the mahogany regularly with a soft cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly, while keeping the zinc interior dry or using a secondary modern liner when holding real plants.
