This large Victorian rocking horse originates from 1900 and exemplifies traditional English country house style. The construction combines carved wood, genuine horsehair for the mane, leather upholstery for the fitted saddle and tack, and metal hardware. The animal is finished in a dapple grey coat with visible wear to the paintwork through usage, mounted upon a dark green safety glider stand fitted with turned upright pillars, rectangular floor feet, and tension springs. The complete arrangement measures 144 cm high, 174 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. Suitable for domestic interiors, the piece serves as a traditional focal point in a playroom, nursery, or empty corner of a living space. The tactile materials, including the soft mane and padded leather seat, create a classic display item that reflects historical children's toys while providing a decorative presence within a traditional room setting.

Safety stand rocking horses, also known as glider horses, were patented in the late nineteenth century as an alternative to traditional bow rockers. The mechanism allows the horse to swing back and forth on iron swing arms suspended within a stationary wooden frame, preventing tipping and protecting flooring.

Victorian rocking horses were typically carved from seasoned softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or beech. They were coated in gesso, hand-painted with signature dapple grey patterns, and fitted with real horsehair manes and tails alongside genuine leather saddlery.

Authentic nineteenth and early twentieth-century examples feature hand-carved muscle definition, glass eyes, plaster gesso undercoats beneath painted finishes, and cast iron brackets or swing irons on the stand structure.

A vintage rocking horse functions as a sculptural floor accent in a bay window, nursery, landing, or empty corner. Placing it against neutral wainscoting or alongside traditional timber furnishings highlights its historical silhouette and crafted texture.

To preserve the original gesso and paint finish, keep the object away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp environments. Leather components should be treated periodically with specialised leather conditioner, and timber components dusted gently with a soft brush.
