This nineteenth century Victorian George II style occasional table functions as a tilting supper or coffee table. Constructed from walnut with burr walnut quarter veneer, the piece presents a warm brown timber colour with a shaped moulded edge surrounding the top. The solid walnut tripod pedestal base displays acanthus carving on the knees, curving downwards into carved claw feet. Measuring height 59 cm, width 82 cm and depth 78 cm, the table suits placement in an empty corner of a home today. The tilting top mechanism allows the surface to lift vertically for compact storage when not in active use as a low display or serving table.

Popular throughout the 19th century, these tables feature a hinged mechanism that allows the tabletop to pivot vertically, saving floor space when not in active use.

They were commonly built with a solid wood substrate faced in highly decorative veneers, such as burr walnut, resting on a turned central pedestal with hand-carved tripod legs.

Authentic examples display symmetrical matchbook veneer patterns, original brass snap catches beneath the top, and hand-carved decorative motifs on the legs.

It serves as a low coffee table or occasional side table, and can be tilted upright to display the decorative wood grain in an empty space.

Position the piece away from direct heat and sunlight to avoid veneer lifting, and apply beeswax polished along the grain to protect the surface finish.
