This Victorian occasional table, dating from 1900, is constructed from warm brown burr walnut and mahogany. The round top displays a highly figured burr walnut veneer with a rich grain, finished with a smooth moulded edge. It is supported by a turned central column above a tripod base with carved cabriole legs and scroll feet. The piece measures 56 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. In a modern interior, this versatile table serves multiple practical purposes, functioning effectively as a coffee table or positioned at the end of a sofa. Its compact proportions allow it to fit comfortably into various living spaces, providing a functional surface while adding traditional English country house character to the room.

A Victorian burr walnut tripod table is a compact occasional table popular during the 19th century, characterised by a circular top featuring highly patterned walnut veneer resting on a turned central column supported by three carved legs.

These tables were constructed using a solid timber substrate covered with thin veneers cut from walnut tree burls to display dense grain patterns. The central column and tripod legs were carved from solid timber for structural stability.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural variations in veneer thickness, hand-finished joinery underneath the top, turned stem profiles typical of the period, and subtle wear to the carved feet and base structure.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa to hold a table lamp, or place it in an empty reading corner paired with contemporary upholstery to create a contrast between rich timber textures and modern fabrics.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax periodically in the direction of the grain to nourish the wood.
