Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French country dining table dates from 1880, built in solid oak with a warm brown finish. The construction displays a four-plank cleated top, straight uprights, and a low H-stretcher joined with peg details. The surface shows a rich grain texture with natural variations in tone across the timber boards. The structure stands on four plain legs joined near the floor by the stretcher rails, creating a simple silhouette characteristic of rustic farmhouse furniture. Measuring 241 cm in length, 81 cm in width, and 71 cm in height, the piece provides generous legroom and surface area for seating. Practical placement suits a traditional kitchen or a country-style dining room, where it functions as a large everyday gathering table for family meals and social occasions. The substantial proportions and sturdy build accommodate frequent daily use while anchoring the space with period character.

FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries for communal dining, characterised by long, narrow proportions, plank tops, and sturdy leg frames connected by low stretchers.

Traditional pieces were constructed from dense, locally sourced hardwoods, predominantly European oak, utilising mortise and tenon joinery held together with wooden pegs rather than metal fasteners.

Authentic examples feature hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular plank widths, visible peg joinery, and natural wear or shrinkage consistent with aged solid wood.

Anchor a contemporary dining space by pairing the table with modern minimalist chairs or mixed seating, creating a balanced tactile contrast against neutral walls.

Protect the timber by using coasters and placemats, wiping spills immediately with a damp cloth, and applying a quality beeswax polish periodically to maintain the surface finish.
