Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French country refrectory kitchen dining table dates from 1880 and possesses a rustic farmhouse style. Made from solid oak, the piece exhibits a warm brown colour with visible wood grain across its five-plank top and frame. The construction incorporates square legs joined by an H-stretcher base with pegged joints, alongside a simple skirt beneath the surface. Natural signs of age and wear appear across the warm timber surfaces, including varied tones and subtle surface marks on the top. The table measures 74 cm high, 201 cm long, and 99 cm wide, providing ample space for seating. In a contemporary home, the dining table functions as a practical centerpiece for everyday family meals and gatherings in a kitchen or dining room. The clean lines and robust build suit both traditional and transitional interior settings, pairing easily with a variety of dining chairs. Daily use benefits from the sturdy stretcher base and generous legroom beneath the top. Maintenance involves simple dusting and occasional care suitable for antique wooden surfaces to preserve the natural warmth of the timber over time.

FAQs

Originally designed for use in monastic dining halls during the Middle Ages, a refectory table is a long, narrow wooden table characterised by robust construction, low stretchers, and sturdy legs designed to accommodate communal dining.

Traditional French refectory tables are constructed from solid hardwoods, predominantly oak or walnut, using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden dowels or pegs.

Authentic examples display signs of hand-planed timber, irregular pegged joints, historical wear around the stretchers from foot placement, and natural patination or oxidisation in the wood grain.

Pair the warm wood tones with contemporary dining chairs, minimalist pendant lighting, or neutral linen textiles to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain solid oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying high-quality beeswax twice yearly, and protecting the surface from direct heat, moisture, and prolonged sunlight.
