Superb Refectory Kitchen Dining Table

19th century
Description

A really lovely fruitwood refectory dining table on tapering square legs and a pull-out extension/chopping board/bread board at one end. It retains its original finish throughout and has a superb patination with a particularly rich colour and a glowing lustre shine. The bread board / chopping board extension could accommodate three small children on high days and holidays, with three adults down each side of the table and one at the other end, so ten in all. With the extension pushed in, this table can accommodate six to eight adults comfortably. This exquisite example, of superior quality and with a beautiful colour and patination, is French c.1850 to c.1875.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This French Country refectory dining table dates from the period around 1870. Constructed from warm brown timber with a visible wood grain, the piece possesses a three-plank top, a straight apron, and four tapered square legs. The surface shows a rich colour and glowing lustre shine, along with knot features and natural timber variation across the boards. The table measures 75.5 cm high, 83 cm wide, and 199.5 cm deep. Positioned in a kitchen or dining room, this refectory table accommodates six to eight adults comfortably for everyday meals. The rustic farmhouse design suits both traditional and country-style interior schemes, providing a practical surface for family dining and social gatherings.

FAQs

A refectory table is an elongated dining table originally designed for communal dining in medieval monasteries, later adapted for domestic kitchens and dining rooms.

Traditional refectory tables are constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or pine, using mortise and tenon joinery alongside thick planked tops.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-hewn timber, pegs or dowel construction, historic shrinkage around joinery, and natural wear patterns along the plank surfaces.

A refectory table can be styled by pairing the natural timber texture with contemporary minimalist dining chairs, architectural pendant lighting, or neutral linen textiles.

Clean the surface regularly using a soft damp cloth, apply a dedicated beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber, and keep the table away from direct heat sources.
