20th Century Decoy Duck - No2

1900 - 1920
Description

We have been fortunate to find a small collection of original Decoy ducks.

Characterful antique folk art decoy duck, shaped and painted by hand with the kind of honest surface and irregularity that only comes with age.

Originally made as a working decoy, it has developed a fabulous timeworn patina, with areas of wear and softened paint that give it real depth and individuality. Pieces like this were created as functional objects rather than decoration, which is precisely what makes them so appealing today.

We love these displayed individually as small sculptural objects, although they work particularly well gathered together as a collection on a console, drapers table or open shelf. Their simple form sits brilliantly alongside both antique and contemporary pieces.

A great little piece of folk art with plenty of personality, history and decorative presence.

This twentieth-century folk art decoy duck comes from a small group of original working decoys shaped and painted by hand. The wooden sculpture displays a grey and brown palette with a distinct green painted speculum patch on the side, a carved beak, inset eyes, and a textured body surface showing a timeworn patina of wear and softened paint. Measuring 12 cm high by 23 cm wide and 10 cm deep, the compact object makes an ideal sculptural display piece for a mantelpiece, console table, or open shelf in a living room, hallway, or study. It functions well as a decorative accent alongside both antique and contemporary furnishings, adding character and history to interior spaces.

Wooden duck decoys originated as functional tools used by wildfowlers to attract waterfowl within hunting range. Originating in North America and Britain, local carvers created distinct regional styles that eventually transitioned from practical hunting apparatus to celebrated forms of folk art.

Decoy ducks from the 20th century were typically carved from lightweight timbers such as cedar, pine, or balsa wood, while some featured cork or composite bodies. Heads were carved separately from hardwood and attached with dowels, followed by applications of oil-based paints and glass or metal eyes.

Authentic decoys often exhibit signs of practical use, such as shot marks, lead weight attachments, or working wear to the painted surface. Examining tool marks, joinery around the neck seam, paint layering, and bottom ballast plates helps establish period authenticity.

A carved wooden decoy acts as a structural accent piece on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard. It pairs well alongside natural materials like aged leather, polished brass, and raw timber within country, lodge, or eclectic interior schemes.

To preserve painted wooden decoys, dust lightly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Avoid water, chemical solvents, and direct sunlight or proximity to heat sources, which can cause timber movement, paint flaking, or discolouration.
