Early 20th Century Decoy Duck - No4

1900 - 1920
Description

We have been fortunate to find a small collection of original Decoy ducks.

Characterful antique folk art decoy duck, shaped and painted by hand with the kind of honest surface and irregularity that only comes with age.

Originally made as a working decoy, it has developed a fabulous timeworn patina, with areas of wear and softened paint that give it real depth and individuality. Pieces like this were created as functional objects rather than decoration, which is precisely what makes them so appealing today.

We love these displayed individually as small sculptural objects, although they work particularly well gathered together as a collection on a console, drapers table or open shelf. Their simple form sits brilliantly alongside both antique and contemporary pieces.

A great little piece of folk art with plenty of personality, history and decorative presence.

This early 20th-century decoy duck is an example of traditional folk art, shaped and painted by hand from wood with a distressed finish. The surface displays a timeworn patina showing areas of wear and softened paint, featuring a red head, a dark green breast, a tapered tail, and glass eyes. Measuring 12 cm high by 31 cm wide and 10 cm deep, this small sculptural object sits comfortably on a bookshelf or console table. Created originally as a functional working decoy, the piece functions well today as a decorative accent within an interior. Its simple form pairs effectively alongside both antique and contemporary furnishings, bringing historical presence and personality to domestic spaces.

Duck decoys originated as functional tools crafted by hunters and artisans to lure wildfowl within range. Over time, these hand-carved objects evolved into recognised forms of folk art and collectible sporting antiques.

Traditional decoys were typically carved from lightweight timber such as pine, cedar, or balsa wood. Artisans shaped the body and head separately, joined them with dowels, and applied hand-painted finishes designed to withstand exposure to water.

Authentic pieces display characteristic signs of age, including natural paint wear, crazing, surface patina, and structural traits such as carved lead weights, glass eyes, or maker stamps along the base.

A carved decoy duck serves as a tactile accent on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table top, adding historic texture and organic shape to modern, traditional, or industrial interiors.

Preserve original painted finishes by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, liquids, or direct heat sources that cause wood shrinkage and paint flaking.
