Early 20th Century Decoy Duck - No3

1900 - 1920
Description

We have been fortunate to find a small collection of original Decoy ducks.

Characterful antique folk art decoy duck, shaped and painted by hand with the kind of honest surface and irregularity that only comes with age.

Originally made as a working decoy, it has developed a fabulous timeworn patina, with areas of wear and softened paint that give it real depth and individuality. Pieces like this were created as functional objects rather than decoration, which is precisely what makes them so appealing today.

We love these displayed individually as small sculptural objects, although they work particularly well gathered together as a collection on a console, drapers table or open shelf. Their simple form sits brilliantly alongside both antique and contemporary pieces.

A great little piece of folk art with plenty of personality, history and decorative presence.

This early twentieth century decoy duck is a hand-carved folk art object created from wood with a painted finish. It exhibits a dark brown colour palette, a weathered surface patina, a tapered beak detail, and a flat base. The tactile timber body displays a rough-hewn texture, softened paintwork, and visible grain irregularities that reflect its honest working origins. Measuring 14 cm high by 26 cm wide and 10 cm deep, it possesses a compact profile suitable for display within a home. Placed on a bookshelf or open shelving unit, it functions as a sculptural decorative accent that complements surrounding antique and contemporary furnishings.

Carved wooden decoy ducks originated as functional tools used by hunters to lure wildfowl into shooting range. Over time, these utilitarian carvings evolved into a recognised form of folk art, celebrated for regional carving styles and craftsmanship.

Traditional decoy ducks were typically carved from lightweight timbers such as white pine, cedar, or balsa, and occasionally constructed using cork bodies with wooden heads. They were sealed and painted with durable lead- or oil-based paints to withstand water immersion.

Authentic period decoys generally display evidence of original hand-tooling marks, natural age-related shrinkage in the timber, and authentic paint wear or flaking. Look for lead weight attachments or rigging holes on the base, which indicate functional field use.

A carved decoy duck works as a tactile accent on open bookshelf displays, mantelpieces, or coffee table tray arrangements. Its weathered wooden surface provides organic texture that pairs well with leather-bound books, brass accents, and neutral backdrop schemes.

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to clean without stripping remaining paint or patina. Avoid using water, detergents, or chemical solvents, and display the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity changes.
