This is an 18th-century French Country solid chestnut dining table in warm brown, measuring 76 cm high, 240 cm wide, and 80 cm deep. The construction uses hand-pegged joints and incorporates a thick top with a waney edge, showing a worn finish with natural patina from age. It stands on five turned baluster legs joined by a low perimeter stretcher base and includes a single frieze drawer fitted with a small metal pull handle. In a contemporary home, this rustic farmhouse table serves as a functional dining table or a large console table. It provides generous surface space for family meals or everyday display use in a dining room, kitchen, or open-plan living area.

A refectory table is a long, rectangular table originally used for communal dining in religious institutions, which evolved into a standard fixture of European rural homes during the 18th century.

Craftsmen constructed these tables using solid native hardwoods such as chestnut or oak, featuring hand-planed timber planks, mortise and tenon joinery, wood pegging, and carved baluster supports.

Authentic period tables display hand-saw marks, natural timber shrinkage across the planks, hand-forged drawer hardware, irregular wooden pegs at the joints, and natural wear patterns along the footrests.

An antique timber table can be paired with contemporary minimalist dining chairs or mid-century modern seating to create a balanced interior contrast against neutral walls and modern lighting.

Maintain timber hydration by applying a high-quality beeswax polish periodically, keep the table away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, and immediately wipe away liquid spills with a dry cloth.
