This French country farmhouse table dates from 1890 and is constructed from solid elm with a warm brown finish. The long rectangular design includes a three-plank top, straight legs, and pegged joinery supported by stretcher rails. Surface characteristics include visible natural grain, marks, and stains on the top that reflect the late-nineteenth-century age of the piece. Practical sizing spans 297 cm in length, 82 cm in width, and 76 cm in height, with a top thickness of 3 cm, providing comfortable clearance between the legs of 249 cm and end overhangs of 20 cm. Placement suits large dining spaces and commercial hospitality settings where substantial seating capacity is required. The rustic aesthetic integrates well into traditional country kitchens or open-plan dining rooms, accommodating up to ten diners for everyday meals or formal gatherings. Routine maintenance involves standard wood care appropriate for antique elm surfaces to preserve the natural patina over time.

FAQs

Late 19th-century French farmhouse tables typically feature robust timber construction, simple rectangular plank tops, and sturdy straight or tapered legs designed for daily utility in rural homes.

Regional hardwoods such as elm, oak, fruitwood, and chestnut were standard, chosen for their durability, dense grain structure, and natural resistance to wear.

Authentic elm pieces exhibit distinct wide, wavy grain patterns, natural shrinkage marks around joints, historical hand-planing marks, and pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Pair the natural wood tones of a rustic table with minimalist seating, modern pendant lighting, or neutral linen textiles to create balanced visual contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying a beeswax polish periodically, and using protective mats to avoid heat or moisture damage.
