French 19th c. Inlaid Kingwood Jardinière with Fine Porcelain Plaque

A fine late 19th-century French kingwood and gilt-bronze mounted jardinière, of elegant Louis XV-inspired form and notable for its refined proportions and decorative detailing.

The removable parquetry-veneered top is centred by a finely painted Sèvres-style porcelain plaque depicting a colourful floral spray against a bleu céleste border, set within an ornate pierced gilt-bronze frame. A decorative pierced gilt-bronze gallery surrounds the top, which is further embellished with finely cast foliate mounts.

The top lifts away to reveal the original metal-lined interior, intended for use as a planter. The shaped and veneered body is richly ornamented with scrolling foliate gilt-bronze mounts and raised on four elegant cabriole legs terminating in foliate sabots.

This jardinière bears close stylistic comparison with a bonheur-du-jour attributed to T.H. Filmer of 32 Berners Street, London, and was removed from the same London residence. Given the similarities in construction and decorative treatment, it is possible that the two pieces originated from the same maker or workshop, although no definitive attribution is made.
