This is a sterling silver walking cane from 1900, bearing London hallmarks and maker's mark CHD. The piece comprises a crook handle modelled as a swan head with a long beak, textured feather ornamentation, and inset glass eyes, joined to a stained tapering partridge wood shaft that ends in a brass ferrule. The cane measures 89 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece serves as a decorative accessory displayed in a hallway stand, umbrella bucket, or study corner. It also functions practically as a walking aid for daily support during strolls outdoors.

During the Edwardian era, silver-topped walking canes served as essential fashion accessories for gentlemen, frequently featuring novelty handles shaped like birds, animals, or figurative motifs.

These items typically feature a cast or chased sterling silver pommel mounted onto a solid hardwood shaft, such as malacca, ebony, or hazel wood.

Authentic British silver canes bear official hallmarks stamped near the collar, including a town mark, makers mark, date letter, and the lion passant indicating sterling purity.

Walking canes can be displayed in an entry hall umbrella stand, mounted horizontally on a display wall, or placed within a glass cabinet as part of a curated collection.

Clean the silver handle gently using a soft microfibre cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to keep chemical cleaners off the wood shaft to prevent finish damage.
