Antique Figured Mahogany Quality Three-pillar 16–18 Seater Extending Dining Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A substantial antique figured mahogany three-pillar extending dining table of classic rectangular form with softly rounded corners raised on three elegant reeded pedestal supports terminating in swept legs with original brass caps and castors. The top displays attractive, well-matched mahogany figuring with a rich, even tone and a well-developed patina.

The table is designed with multiple original extension leaves, allowing it to extend to an impressive length and comfortably seat between sixteen and eighteen diners. The three-pillar base configuration provides excellent legroom, strength, and balance, ensuring stability even when fully extended.

This is a refined and highly practical dining table, suitable for large-scale entertaining and it sits comfortably within both traditional interiors and grand contemporary spaces.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pedestal dining table is a table supported by one or more central vertical pillars rather than four perimeter legs. This configuration originated in the late eighteenth century to provide unobstructed legroom and facilitate flexible seating arrangements.

Traditional Regency dining tables are predominantly constructed from dense woods such as Cuban or South American mahogany, often incorporating flame or figured veneers. Secondary timbers typically include oak or pine, complemented by solid brass castors and metal leaf-joining clips.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, original brass fittings, and signs of hand-planing on unexposed undersides. The wood patina should show natural aging, uneven oxidisation, and genuine wear around the base and edges where usage naturally occurs.

A large mahogany table can be paired with contemporary upholstered dining chairs to soften the dark wood tones. Positioning the piece under architectural lighting or balancing it against neutral walls highlights the timber grain while maintaining an uncluttered aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, and finish deterioration.
