This grand Regency style dining table dates to 1920 and takes the form of a monumental oval piece in warm brown mahogany and satinwood. The surface has a highly polished finish displaying richly figured veneers enclosed by a contrasting satinwood crossbanded border along the rim. A substantial twin pedestal base supports the top, incorporating reeded column supports, splayed sabre legs, and brass-capped feet with castors. Minor age-related wear is present on the wood consistent with proper use over time. Measuring 73.5 cm high, 244 cm wide, and 176.5 cm deep, it seats up to 12 people comfortably. Placing this large dining table in a grand dining room, country house, or expansive entertaining space provides an impressive setting for dinner parties and large family meals. The wide proportions supply generous seating space while the twin pedestal arrangement allows guests ample legroom beneath the top. Daily use requires standard maintenance of the polished timber surface using appropriate care for antique furniture.

FAQs

Regency style dining tables, originating in early 19th-century Britain, are characterised by clean architectural lines, rich mahogany woods, twin or triple pedestal supports, and fine inlay work such as satinwood crossbanding.

These tables were typically constructed using solid mahogany for the structural frame and pedestal legs, topped with highly figured mahogany veneers, contrast satinwood border crossbanding, and fitted with brass toe caps and castors.

Look for hand-turned pedestal columns, original brass castors secured with period screws, dovetailed timber under-framing, and carefully matched wood veneers along the crossbanded rim.

Designers often balance the substantial scale of a dark wood table by pairing it with light upholstered dining chairs, modern neutral wall palettes, and contemporary statement lighting above the centre.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year, ensuring the wood is kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent surface cracking or fading.
