Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This extending dining room table belongs to the Grand Regency period around 1825 and is made of solid flame mahogany with a warm brown polished finish. The rectangular top has rounded corners and sits upon three strong turned mahogany pedestals with reeded details, terminating on original brass toe castors and fitted with removable extension leaves. The table measures 72 cm high, 300 cm wide, and 132 cm deep. This piece seats eight to twelve people comfortably. In a contemporary home, this table serves as the centrepiece of a formal dining room for hosting dinner parties, family gatherings, and everyday meals. It provides generous surface space for tableware, centerpieces, and serving dishes while anchoring the room with classic British cabinet-making proportions.

FAQs

Regency extending dining tables typically feature polished mahogany tops supported by central pedestal bases, often with reeded legs terminating in brass cap castors. Designed during the early 19th century, these tables utilized removable leaf sections or mechanism-driven runners to adjust overall length.

Tables from this period are traditionally constructed from solid or veneered mahogany, valued for its fine grain and stability. The pedestals are engineered with heavy wooden block joints and brass or iron latches beneath the top to securely hold extension leaves in position.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery underneath, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and hand-carved reeding on the legs. Surface wear should align with age, particularly around the pedestals, edges, and leaf contact points.

A large mahogany table can be paired with contemporary minimalist dining chairs or upholstered seating to balance visual weight. Positioning the piece over a neutral wool rug accentuates the dark timber grain and anchors the room.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to maintain timber moisture. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer movement and fading.
