This Anglo-Indian serving tray originates from 1910 and displays the traditional Kashmiri craftsmanship of the period. Fashioned from dark brown walnut with bone inlay, the rectangular piece exhibits dense foliate woodcarvings across its borders and integrated cut-out handles at each side. A central oval medallion dominates the face, filled with delicate floral relief work and contrasting pale bone decoration. The raised moulded edges and flat base provide a secure surface for use. Measuring 61 cm wide and 41 cm deep, the tray suits everyday presentation or display purposes within a gentleman's library style interior. It functions effectively as a decorative accent on a living room coffee table or sideboard, offering a portable serving surface for drinks and small items. The dark timber tones and intricate inlaid details integrate naturally into traditional or eclectic settings.

Kashmiri woodcarving developed as a prominent craft in Northern India, gaining widespread international popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries under British colonial influence. Local artisans utilized native walnut timber to create intricate relief carvings and inlay work inspired by regional flora.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from solid dark walnut wood, known for its fine grain and durability. The decorative central motifs often incorporate shell, bone, or mother-of-pearl inlays cut into geometric or natural shapes.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved, high- or low-relief floral patterns such as chinar leaves and lotus flowers. The reverse side typically shows manual tool marks rather than modern machine sanding, and the inlay materials demonstrate slight irregularities consistent with hand-fitting.

Position the tray flat on a coffee table or sideboard to anchor smaller decorative objects like brass candlesticks, small ceramics, or glassware. Alternatively, display it upright on a plate stand within a shelving unit to showcase the detailed woodwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clear intricate carved recesses. Avoid applying water or chemical cleaners, and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber nourish the grain.
