Georgian Cuban Mahogany Tilt-Top Occasional Table Circa 1760–1780

A particularly attractive George III period mahogany tilt-top occasional table, dating from the second half of the 18th century and displaying the elegant simplicity and quality associated with Georgian cabinetmaking.

The circular top is fashioned from a single piece of richly figured Cuban mahogany, with a particularly pleasing depth of colour and beautifully developed patina. The top retains its traditional tilting mechanism, allowing it to be raised vertically when not in use.

Raised upon a well-proportioned turned and baluster-shaped central column, the table terminates in three gracefully swept cabriole-form legs. Each leg retains its original small brass castor, an especially appealing survival which adds greatly to the table’s authenticity and character.

The underside reveals the traditional construction and mechanism, while the overall proportions are particularly successful. The combination of the wonderfully mellow mahogany, restrained Georgian design and practical tilt-top makes this a highly versatile antique.

A good quality and very decorative Georgian table, equally suitable beside a sofa or armchair, as a lamp table, occasional table or positioned within a hallway or drawing room.
